Sailing earns two All-Americans

Andrew Goetting and Matt Duggan become 2nd & 3rd sailing All-Americans in RWU history

NEWPORT, R.I. – After their performance in the ICSA/Gill National Championship last week, Roger Williams University sailors Andrew Goetting (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and Matt Duggan (Sandwich, Mass.) were each named Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Both Goetting and Duggan played crucial roles in Roger Williams’ fourth-place finish at Nationals last week. Goetting sailed in all 18 races in A division during the three-day championship, while Duggan was on the water for the 18 races in B division. The Hawks finished third overall in A division and sixth in B division.

Goetting took part in seven races during the fall season and four in the spring season, all in A division. He garnered six top-seven finishes, including a third-place showing at the Navy Fall Intersectional in October. In the spring season, Goetting finished in the top five in three out of the four races he participated in, prior to Nationals.

Duggan put together an equally impressive season, sailing primarily in B division. He placed in the top eight in every race in both the fall and spring seasons, with seven in the top three. Duggan picked up three runner-up finishes, most notably in the Coed Atlantic Coast Championships back in November.

Head Coach Amanda Callahan expressed her delight in the Goetting and Duggan’s selection to the All-America squad, making note of the strong field of participants at the championships due to the new format for qualifying.

"Honorable Mention accolades for Andy and Matt were icing on the cake,” said Callahan. “Throughout the year Andy and his crew Kaytlin Hall had several really strong finishes in A division, and Matt Duggan and his crews sailed consistently to the top of B Division. I think their strong finish to the year really made it happen for them.”

The two join former Hawk sailor David Hyer as only the second and third All-American sailors in school history.
