Athletic Training
Athletic Training Room Staff Kristin Raffa, ATC, Head Athletic Trainer: Joshua King, ATC, Assistant Athletic Trainer: jnking@rwu.edu General Information Phone: (401) 254-5721 Fax: (401) 254-5737 Certified athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents. All student-athletes (varsity and club sports) must fill out an Annual Information Form to be eligible for participation. If you are unable to download the forms, please contact the athletic training room to have the forms sent in the mail. All first time participants in RWU athletic programs (first year students, transfer students and students who did not participate on a team last year) are also required to have a current physical examination that specifically clears them for unrestricted athletic participation. First year students at RWU can use the Health Services Physical Examination to fulfill this requirement. Please submit a copy of Health Services Physical Examination, or file a request with the athletic training room to obtain medical clearance from Health Services. If you have already sent the physical exam to Health Services, please do not contact them directly for a copy of your physical exam. Other first time participants (transfer students, upperclassmen joining a team) should have the Pre Participation Physical Exam form filled out by their health care provider. It is also recommended that student-athletes have a Pre Participation Physical Exam every 2 years during participation in athletics. Please submit a copy of this follow-up physical exam to the athletic training room. Documentation will also be required for any current injuries or illnesses that have been treated by a medical professional outside the RWU Athletic Training Department. Please submit all completed forms to: RWU - Athletic Training
The athletic training room will usually be open for games and matches 2 hours prior to the start and 1 hour following the event. In the event of back to back contests, the athletic training room facility may only be available prior to the start of the first game. Certified Athletic Trainers will be available during all home contests. Please let us know if your team has any special requests. Moist Heat Packs and Ice Bags will be available to visiting teams. Ultrasound or Electrical Stimulation will only be available under special situations when the treatment has been pre-arranged by the visiting team's staff athletic trainer. Visiting athletic teams will also be expected to provide their own supplies for taping and first aid.
