Sailing in 5th place after Day 1 of the Coed Dinghy National Championships

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After dealing with cold conditions on the California waters, the Roger Williams University Sailing team sits in fifth place after the first day of the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championships.

The first day of Nationals was a long, cold day on the water for competitors. Race 1 for A Division began around 10:30 a.m., with the last B Division race ending at 6:45 p.m.  The breeze was 15-20 knots the majority of the day with the highest gust clocked at 22 knots.  The wind dropped to 12-15 knots at one point mid-day, then ramped back up at the end.

Eight races were sailed on the day, with Matthew Duggan (Sandwich, Mass.) and Maria Petrillo (Bristol, R.I.) on the water for the Hawks in A Division, and Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kaytlin Hall (Los Angeles, Calif.) representing in B Division.

Duggan and Petrillo ended Day 1 with a 12-place showing in A Division. The duo had finishes of seventh, second, and sixth in three races on the day, but were unable to place higher than 12th in the remaining five. Thompson and Hall fared better, as they sit in third place in B Division after finishing in the top-five in six of their races and never placing lower than tenth.

St. Mary's College currently has a 27-point lead over the 18-team field after the first day.

Racing will resume tomorrow morning at 1:00 p.m. EST.
