Anderson competes in first heptathlon for Women’s Track & Field

WORCESTER, Mass. – Competing in the heptathlon for the first time in the history of the program, freshman Courtney Anderson (Palmer, Mass.) finished the event with a personal best effort of 2,537 points, 379 points better than her high school mark and setting a new school record.

In the first day of competition, Anderson broke the RWU school record in the shot put with a heave of 31' 10", besting the previous mark of 31' 8" set in 2008 by Melanie Arduini. Anderson also had season bests in the High Jump (4' 2.75"), 200 Meter Dash (30.69) and was close to a season best in the 100 Meter Hurdles, racing down the track in 21.76 seconds.

"The conditions were raw and cold but Courtney came out and competed hard," said Throws and Multi-events Coach Tom Conley. "She's here competing against more experienced DI & DIII athletes but it's obviously not shaking her confidence."

On the second day, Anderson began with a personal best in the Long Jump with a mark of 12' 10" before taking part in the Javelin Throw, finishing with an effort of 96' 8". To close out the meet, Anderson set another personal best in the 800 Meter Run, posting a time of 3:11.34 seconds.

"We fell just short of the New England qualifying score but I'm proud of how she competed," said Conley.  "She had a season or personal-best in five out of the seven events she competed in over the last two days. She's just a freshman and I believe she's got a bright future in the heptathlon."

Anderson and the Hawks held out to Connecticut Saturday for the Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College.
