NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Cross Country team took 13th place at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Invitational Saturday afternoon, running in the first 5-mile race of the season.
Freshman Kevin Terbush (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was the Hawks' first finisher with a personal best time of 26:39.06, good for 59th. Sophomore Jack Ferguson was shortly behind him, in 63rd with a time of 26:40.34 despite developing a side stitch in the final half mile.
Two freshman would take the next two spots for Roger Williams, with Joshua Lopes (South Dennis, Mass.) and Sean Doyle (Guilderland, N.Y.) setting personal bests with respective times of 27:16.77 and 27:31.50, placing 89th and 105th.
Junior Steven Carnevale (Easton, Mass.) took 1:30 off his best from last year, racing to a time of 27:34.26 in 109th place.
Sophomore Dan Herbein (York, Maine) was next for RWU, also setting a personal record with a time of 28:14.87, coming in 143rd place. Jeff Pini (Wellesley, Mass.) came in one place after Herbein, also setting a new personal best in 28:15.33.
“We finished 13th as a team, an improvement from last year and the guys really rolled to some fast times,” said Head Coach Sean Livingston. “That's the validation for all the work they've done up to this point. We are such a young team and to see how they handled themselves in such a big meet was impressive. There is much to be done, though, and I think they are still hungry for more.”
Roger Williams next competes at the Pop Crowell Invitational next Saturday, hosted by Gordon College.
