BRISTOL, R.I. - The Student Athlete Advisory Committee, better known as SAAC, hosted a “Support Haiti” event on January 28th during the Men’s and Women’s Basketball games. Members of SAAC brought baked goods for those in attendance. Fans were encouraged to donate throughout the evening. Altogether, the fundraiser brought in $750.

BRISTOL, R.I. - The RWU Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams teamed up with the Bristol Good Neighbor’s Soup Kitchen in a food drive that spanned the entire town of Bristol.

Springfield, Mass. – The RWU Wrestling Team participated in the New England Wrestling Association’s “Headlock for Hunger” program this weekend, collecting donations and food items for the local Springfield, Mass. food pantry.

BRISTOL, R.I. - Roger Williams University juniors Samantha Buechner (Nashua, N.H.) and Leah Junco-Seyer (Basking Ridge, N.J.) of the Women’s Cross Country Team will be traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon to benefit the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America.

BRISTOL, R.I.The Student Athlete Advisory Committee as well as the Intercultural Center recently hosted the third annual Student-Athlete Date Auction.  The two organizations held the event in an effort to raise money for a summer camp in Haiti for underprivileged children, giving them a number of opportunities that they would not normally have.

BRISTOL, R.I. - It is nearly impossible to find anyone whose life has not been touched by cancer, whether it is through a friend, family member, or even a teammate. Recently, on October 25th, the Roger Williams University Swimming and Diving team participated in a Breast Cancer Walk which yielded $300 to help fight the deadly disease.  The Hawks Swimmers and Divers have found one more way to fight back: the fourth annual Ted Mullin “Leave it in the Pool” Hour of Power Relay for Pediatric Sarcoma Research, sponsored by the Carleton College swimming and diving teams, set for Tuesday, Nov. 10.

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams participated in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk” in Providence on Sunday morning at the Roger Williams Park.  The event was put on by the American Cancer Society and was a 3.2 mile walk from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.  This was just one of 21 events like it held this month in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men’s and Women’s Soccer team went beyond the fields of competition and helped put on a clinic for a group of Rhode Island Special Olympians.  The team members were coaches, ran clinics, and worked at drill stations to get involved with the Special Olympics.

BRISTOL, R.I. – Last Saturday the Roger Williams University Women’s Volleyball team held its first annual “Dig Pink Event” in an effort to raise money and spread awareness about breast cancer.  The Hawks honored two-time breast cancer survivor and RWU Dining Staff member Judy Montalvo, and had a moment of silence to honor those that have lost their courageous battle.

BRISTOL, R.I. – On Sunday the Roger Williams University Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams helped in putting on the second annual Brandon Motta 5k Road Race held at Colt State Park.  Thirty-Five athletes volunteered at the event which is held to benefit the seven year old boy from Riverside, R.I. who has an undiagnosed neuromuscular disorder.  Proceeds from the event are used to help with medical bills and his day to day care.

Ryan Weekes
Women's Basketball

BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University sophomore Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) of the Women’s Basketball team has been named the RWU Female Athlete of the Week for her excellent performance in all three of the team’s games last week. She recorded 29 points and 25 rebounds on the week, including a double-double on Thursday night.

 

In their first game at Western New England College Weekes recorded 11 points, five rebounds with five steals and four assists. Weeks and the Hawks then hosted UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday night. She contributed to the win with a double-double, ten points and 12 rebounds. Finally, the team closed out the week against Wentworth Institute of Technology with Weeks contributing eight points and eight rebounds towards the team’s effort.

 

Weeks and the rest of the Women’s Basketball team return to action Tuesday at home in conference play against Gordon College at 6 p.m. prior to heading to New England College over the weekend.
Nick Cambi
Wrestling

BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University junior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) of the Wrestling team has been named the RWU Male Athlete of the Week for his undefeated performance in their tri-meet on Friday, Jan. 15th.  He won his first match against Wesleyan University by a final of 3-1 before posting a 6-1 decision over his opponent from Trinity College.

 

In the team’s first match versus Wesleyan University the Hawks were trailing 12-3 before Cambi and two other Hawks won their matches to tie the score at 12. In the second match against Trinity College his victory by a final of 6-1 cut their opponent’s lead to only one point. The Hawks would later win the matchup.

 

Cambi and the rest of the Wrestling team will return to the mat in the New England Division III Dual Meet Championships at Springfield College on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.
