PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Sunday October 14th, the Roger Williams Cheerleading squad headed to Providence, RI to show support at the annual Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
Held at Roger Williams Park, the Hawks' cheerleaders helped kick off the event by cheering on the walkers all the way to the finish line. The team was joined by the Bryant University cheerleaders to help create a joy-filled atmosphere.
“I was touched by the amount of people who showed up for such a good cause,” said junior
Alexa Allen (Ringwood, N.J.), member of the RWU cheerleading squad and daughter of a breast cancer survivor. “I plan to make cheering at the event an annual cheerleading tradition
The subject of cancer is close to many of the teammate's hearts; it is a cause that the young women strongly support. The presence of the squad at the event made an impact on many of the participants.
“You girls really made this event something fun and your spirit gave us hope,” stated one of the walkers, a breast cancer survivor.
Providing community service and getting involved is a trait shared by all Hawks cheerleaders and instilled upon their team from the moment they join the squad. In addition to this year's participation at the walk, the squad plans to organize a donations team on behalf of the university next year after learning that a member of the Roger Williams staff is currently battling breast cancer.
“Being involved with community service on the team helps us realize that we can impact our community,” said freshman
Stephanie Birch said. “Because this is my first year at Roger Williams, being part of such a great cause has helped me feel like an important member of not only my team, but the school community”.
Look out for the Hawks' cheerleaders at upcoming basketball games and community service events.
