BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams Women's Rugby Club won the semi-final match in the Plate Championship, defeating Babson, 17-5. Played in very muddy conditions, the game featured another comeback for the Lady Hawks, who trailed at halftime, 5-0.
In the 2nd half Roger Williams began to dominate the rucks and scrums, and a driving maul by the Hawks resulted in a try by Co-Captain and flanker, Alison Littleton (Woburn, Mass.). Several minutes later, center Brittany Gallin (Glen Rock, N.J.) tackled a Babson runner, stole the ball, and scored a try, all in one movement. Babson could mount little offense against the tough tackling Hawks, and excellent rucking by Christine Nelson (Succasunna, N.J.), Erin O'Connell (Unionville, Conn.), Jenny Schermerhorn (Andover, N.H.) and Sara Panaccio kept possession of the ball in the hands of RWU. A peel play from a lineout resulted in a 30 yard run for a score by Littleton, and the match ended with the Hawks on top, 17-5.
The Women's Rugby team will be hosting Holy Cross for the Plate final, this weekend for a shot at the championship.
