BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams Women's Rugby Club won its fifth match in a row Friday night, winning the Plate Championship over Holy Cross 8-0.
The back and forth contest remained scoreless for most of the first half, until center Brittany Gallin (Glen Rock, N.J.) broke off a long run. Gallin was tackled only yards from the try line, where a successful ruck put the ball in Captain Alison Littleton's (Woburn, Mass.) hands, who touched the ball down for the go-ahead score. The half ended with Roger Williams up, 5-0.
In the second half, the Hawks began to take control of the game with aggressive tackling and fine runs from Gallin, Littleton, wing Hayley Wickstrom (Phoenixville, Pa.), and number 8 Jenny Schermerhorn (Sherborn, Mass.). Fullback Dayna Smith's (South Windsor, Conn.) kicking kept the ball clear from Hawk territory, and the entire Hawk team became a stone wall that Holy Cross could hardly penetrate. Except for a short period towards the end of the match, the opponent never threatened. A penalty kick by Schermerhorn put the Hawks up, 8-0 and concluded the scoring. The win earns Roger Williams Women's Rugby another addition to the trophy case.
Next up for the Hawks is the Cianci 7's tournament on November 14th, where RWU is the defending champion.
