DEDHAM, Mass. - The RWU Women's Track & Field team kicked off 2010 this past Saturday with a number of broken school records at the Husky Spring Open, hosted by Northeastern University.
The first of six school records broken was by sophomore co-captain Kristin Metcalf (Londonderry, N.H.), who set a new mark in the in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.00 to take 13th. The second school record broken was by sophomore Katelyn Kotfila (Falmouth, Mass.) in the javelin, throwing for 34.76 meters and earning seventh place. In the process, Kotfila also qualified for the New England Championships this upcoming April.
Freshman Kathryn Swanson (Stoneham, Mass.) broke the third school record in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing 15th with a time of 18.27, while classmate Maggie Blinn (Billerica, Mass.) finished 4th in the triple jump, setting the fourth school record at 10.06 meters and also qualifying for the New England Championships.
The women were also very successful in the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays, setting the fifth and sixth school records and qualifying for the New England Championships in both. Metcalf, freshman Jill Gavrilescu (Marblehead, Mass.), sophomore Maria LoBalbo (Bethel, Conn.) and sophomore co-captain Meghan Krauss (Holliston, Mass.) finished 5th in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 52.39, and Metcalf, Blinn, Krauss, and Gavrilescu finished 4th in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:20.15
Head Coach Sean Livingston could not be more excited to continue the year. “With the work ethic that these teams have, I expect many more school records, New England Qualifiers & ECAC qualifiers. Coach Shadowens, Coach Conley, and I are very proud of their effort today and the way they competed. We couldn't have asked for a better start to the season.”
The Hawks look to head back into action on Saturday at the Jerry Gravel Classic, hosted by Westfield State College.
