Track & Field holds their own at ECAC Championship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The Roger Williams University Track & Field team closed out the 2010 season Friday afternoon by taking part in the ECAC Championships, hosted by Springfield College.

Seven athletes from both the men's and women's teams competed for the Hawks in the two-day event. It marked the first time in the history of either program that Roger Williams had an athlete qualify for the championships.

The 4x100 Relay team, consisting of, Emily D'Iorio (Peabody, Mass.), Meghan Krauss (Holliston, Mass.), Maria LoBalbo (Bethel, Conn.), and Kristen Metcalf (Londonderry, N.H.) had the best showing for Roger Williams in the meet, setting a new school record with a time of 50.47 and a 9th-place finish after being seeded 20th.

“Those four have just gotten better & better as the season went along culminating w/ today's effort,” said Head Coach Sean Livingston. “It was a fitting way to end the year having broken the record yet again.”

Freshman Evan Jones (Lexington, Mass.) competed in the Triple Jump for the Hawks, finishing the day with his second-best jump of the year. His distance of 13.40 meters placed him 15th among the field.

Sophomore Katelyn Kotfila (Falmouth, Mass.) threw the Javelin for RWU, with a 14th-place performance after a hurl of 115' 3”.

Liliana Rutler (Wyckoff, N.J.) represented the Hawks as one of only eight freshmen in the field to qualify for the 10K Run. A fast early pace and a recent foot injury made for a tough race, but still managed to pull off a 19th place finish with a time of 40:57.60.

“I know her time wasn't what she was looking for, but she battled through as best she could,” Livingston said.

Both teams conclude the 2010 season with a plethora of broken school records, a pair of conference titles, and a number of returning athletes to make another strong run in the 2011 season.
