Men’s Track & Field successful at New England Championships

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Men's Track & Field team competed in the New England Championships hosted by Tufts University this past weekend with exceptional finishes.

At the decathlon portion, sophomore co-captain Jamie Goodwick (Newtown, Conn.), not only smashed his own school record of 5,414 points with a score of 5,805 points, but did so by having decathlon bests in each of the ten events that comprise the two-day competition.  In doing so, Goodwick earned a 5th-place finish overall and the honor of becoming RWU's first Men's All-New England Track & Field athlete.

“People underestimate just how tough you have to be mentally to compete in the decathlon,” said Assistant Coach Tom Conley. “Over a two day period, you're competing on and off for over twelve hours and you have to get yourself psyched up for ten different events. For Jamie to have performed better in each of those ten events than he did during his first decathlon is just an awesome feat.”

Evan Jones (Lexington, Mass.) broke the school record in the triple jump, clearing a distance of 13.8 meters. He finished 5th overall and qualified for the ECAC Championships.

“Jones was incredible in the Triple Jump, leaping over 45' and smashing his own school record,” said Head Coach Sean Livingston. “He got himself into the ECAC meet and is knocking on the door of hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.”

Also competing for the Hawks was Austin Bobrow (Rocky Hill, Conn.), who took 16th in the Triple Jump with a distance of 12.42 meters. In the Men's Discus Throw, Emil Pornelos (Hartford, Vt.) earned 19th place after throwing the plate 125' 4”.

The team will continue its season on May 13th at the ECAC Championship meet.
