BRISTOL, R.I. – Norwich University mounted a three-goal comeback to defeat the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team 4-3 in overtime Sunday afternoon in the Consolation Game of the 2010 Roger Williams University Turfer Athletic Classic. William Paterson University claimed the tournament title with a 3-0 victory over Plymouth State University.
In the first game of the day, Roger Williams and Norwich faced off in the consolation match with an early 11:00 am start. Both teams wasted little time putting tally marks on the scoreboard, as the Hawks struck first in the fourth minute. Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) headed a Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.) pass, essentially lying on the ground, to the right corner for the 1-0 lead. Norwich responded less than four minutes later, when Ryan Campbell (Damascus, Md.) hooked a free kick into the box to Roger Motaze (Cameroon). Motaze found Jake Leclaire (Henderson, Nev.) on the opposite side, who then knocked in the tying score.
Neither team would score over the remainder of the half, until Kissane bent in a pass from Bradley MacDonald (Topsfield, Mass.) in the 57th minute to put RWU up 2-1. The Hawks added one more score at the 69:18 mark when Andres Daza (Farmington, Conn.) dropped a short pass to Jeff MacDonald (Auburn, Mass.), who converted the shot to put the Hawks up by two.
RWU appeared to be on its way to a win, but Ryan Robertson (Northfield, Vt.) headed in Leclaire's free kick in the 75th minute to pull Norwich within one. The Cadets completed the comeback with only 3:56 to play as Garrett Shufelt (Clifton Park, N.Y.) knocked in a pass from Joe Young (McLean, Va.) to tie the game at three.
In the sixth minute of the extra session, Shufelt rolled a long pass up the middle to a streaking Leclaire, who fired from the right side, giving Norwich the 4-3 overtime win.
Alex Toomey (Anchorage, Alaska) made six saves for the Cadets in the win, while Hawk keeper Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) stopped one shot in the loss. Leclaire and Campbell were named to the All-Tournament team for Norwich, while Jeff MacDonald and Andrew Nigro (Scarborough, Maine) earned the recognition for Roger Williams.
In the championship game, an aggressive William Paterson team took control early, keeping the Plymouth State defense on its heels. Pioneer midfielder Ryan Miller (Colonia, N.J.) put William Paterson on top 1-0 in the 15th minute with a beautiful backwards header off of a free kick by Tournament Offensive MVP Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J.)
At the 22:20 mark, Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J.) took advantage of a misplayed by the Plymouth State defense and chipped a short shot over the Panthers' keeper to increase William Paterson's lead to 2-0.
Mike Lowe (Wilmington, Del.) gave the Pioneers their third and final goal of the day after an aggressive pursuit of the ball from a Panther defender in the box. After taking the ball away, Lowe put the shot on goal and into the back of the net to cap off a six-shot day.
Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J.) picked his second win of the tournament in a three-save effort, while Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) made four saves in the loss. Dre Cabral (Tokyo, Japan), Moses Igah (Abuja, Nigeria), and Anders Olsson (Sturefors, Sweden) each received All-Tournament honors for Plymouth State. Lowe, Boucher, and Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, N.J.) were all named to the All-Tournament team, with Michael Encarnacion (Franklin, N.J.) being named Tournament Defensive MVP.
