Three RWU Women's volleyball players received recognition after the team opened the season with an impressive 4-1 record. Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) was given the TCCC Athlete of the Week award, freshman middle hitter Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) received TCCC Rookie of the Week honors and senior Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) was named the TCCC Libero of The Week.
Twarog put up excellent numbers throughout the first week of the season. She averaged 3.53 kills, 2.41 digs, and .47 blocks per set in the team's first five matches. To highlight her week, Twarog had 16 kills in four sets at Springfield.
In addition to Twarog, freshmen middle hitter Krystie Luczynski received TCCC recognition with rookie of the week honors. Luczynski had 10 kills against Eastern Connecticut State University in a four set victory. She also hit .241 and averaged 2.20 kills per set in a week that saw the Hawks go 4-1.
In addition to these two honors, RWU senior Jill Hurd received the Libero of The Week honor for the TCCC. Hurd averaged 5.35 digs per set throughout the 17 sets played by RWU this week. Against Eastern Connecticut State, Hurd posted a season-high 20 digs leading the Hawks to a 3-1 victory.
The Hawks defeated Eastern Connecticut 3-1 Wednesday before heading to Springfield, Mass., for the Springfield College Invitational. There the Hawks defeated Lasell 3-0, Westfield State 3-0, and Brandeis 3-0. In the championship game, the Hawks suffered a 3-1 loss to Springfield College. The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Emmanuel College in Boston in a 7 p.m. matchup.
