BRISTOL, R.I. – RWU senior Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) has been selected as the RWU Male Athlete of the Week after a runner-up finish this past weekend at the ICSA Men’s Singlehanded National Championship. This marks the third straight year that Thompson has finished fifth or better at the event.

Thompson opened the regatta on a strong note, winning his first four races while maintaining a lead throughout the first 16 races. A late push by eventual National Champion Charlie Buckingham of Georgetown University in the final two races moved Thompson into second place overall.

Thompson finished last year’s singlehanded championship in fifth place overall and won the national championship two years ago in 2008, recording Roger Williams’ first-ever national championship in the history of the sailing program.

This marks Thompson’s third RWU Male Athlete of the Week honor, last receiving the recognition on October 12 after finishing in second at the New England Men’s Singlehanded Qualifiers and earning a berth to this past weekend’s championship.
