Welcome to the RWU Hawk Family!
The Department of Athletics is excited to welcome you to Roger Williams University! We are thrilled that you have chosen to become a member of the RWU Hawk Family.
The Department of Athletics is here to support you throughout your time at RWU. Our goal is to help you grow, challenge yourself, and make the most of every opportunity—both as a student and as an athlete. We are committed to doing everything we can to make your experience as a student-athlete successful, meaningful, and memorable.
The University and the Department of Athletics are committed to providing you with opportunities to excel in the classroom, in competition, and in life.
You will have faculty members who will challenge you to do your best in the classroom. They will push you to think differently, ask questions, and see the world from different perspectives. Many of them will also be on the sidelines supporting you as Faculty-Athlete Mentors. If you take the time to build those relationships, some of your professors may become your biggest advocates and mentors during your college experience.
You also have coaches who are committed to your development as an athlete and as a person. They will challenge you, hold you accountable, and push you to accomplish things you may not have thought possible. Along the way, you will develop relationships with your coaches and teammates that can become some of the most meaningful relationships of your college years—and, in many cases, lifelong friendships.
Being a Student-Athlete
Collegiate athletics is a privilege, not a right. Participating in intercollegiate athletics is an opportunity that few people have, and with that opportunity comes responsibility.
As a student-athlete, you are a representative of Roger Williams University, your team, your coaches, your teammates, and yourself. You are a role model both on campus and in the community.
Ethical conduct and integrity must be at the core of everything you do.
Your performance in the classroom matters. Your behavior in the residence halls matters. The way you treat your teammates, classmates, faculty, staff, officials, and members of the community matters. Your work ethic in practice and competition matters. Even what you post on social media matters.
Just as importantly, we expect you to embrace and respect the differences that make our community stronger. Treat others with dignity, lead by example, and understand that your actions have an impact far beyond yourself.
Be the kind of Hawk you want others to be.
Know Your Responsibilities
This Student-Athlete Handbook contains important policies, guidelines, resources, and expectations for all RWU student-athletes. Please take the time to read it thoroughly and become familiar with the information it contains.
Knowing the expectations is your responsibility. If you ever have a question or are unsure about a policy or situation, ask before you act. Our staff is here to help you navigate your college experience.
Finally, please know that our doors are always open. Feel free to stop by our offices if you have a question, concern, need some guidance, or simply want to say hello. You are an important part of the RWU Hawk Family, and we want you to know that the Department of Athletics is here for you.
Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Work hard. Support one another. Be willing to learn. Challenge yourself. Enjoy the journey.
Good luck this year, Hawks!
