BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University freshman Jon Pornelos (Hartford, Vt.) was named RWU Male Athlete of the Week after his strong performance in the Track and Field team’s season opener last weekend, setting a new RWU record in the Men’s Javelin Throw.

Competing in his first collegiate meet at the Husky Spring Open, hosted by Northeastern University, Pornelos threw the javelin a personal best 181’7” to place fifth among all 42 throwers. The distance set a new RWU record, breaking the previous RWU record set in 2009 by Brian Nelson. His distance also qualified him for both the New England Championship and the ECAC Championship in May.

Pornelos and the Hawks return to action Saturday when they travel to Westfield, Mass. for the Jerry Gravel Classic at Westfield State College.
