BRISTOL, R.I. – Women’s volleyball sophomore Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was named The Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week and RWU Female Athlete of the Week Monday after leading the Hawks to a 3-1 record last week, including wins over the defending GNAC Champions and three-time defending Little East Conference Champions.
Dion posted an impressive .280 hitting percentage in four matches played, adding nine solo blocks and 10 block assists for a 1.3 blocks-per-game average. She totaled 31 kills on 75 swings, averaging 2.1 kills-per-game.
In the team’s first weekday road match of the season, the Hawks traveled to Eastern Connecticut State where Dion posted 12 kills with zero errors on 19 attempts. Her strong play led RWU to the 3-1 victory.
Saturday the Hawks hosted the RWU Invitational Tournament, beginning with Rivier College. Dion registered a .310 hitting percentage with 12 kills in the five-set victory.
A strong Amherst team handed RWU its only loss of the week, despite Dion’s three blocks in the three-set match.
Against the University of New England, RWU continued its strong play, earning the three-set sweep while Dion notched five kills on 12 swings and added five blocks.
For her strong play Saturday, Dion was named to the RWU Invitational All-Tournament Team.
RWU returns to action Saturday, hosting The Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Western New England College at 11 a.m. and Colby-Sawyer College at 3 p.m.
