BRISTOL, R.I.- Junior wrestler Jared Czarneski (Shelton, Conn.) was named RWU Male Athlete of the Week and New England Wrestling Association Wrestler of the Week, Monday, after his outstanding performance at the Williams Invitational.
Wrestling at 174, Czarneski posted a 4-0 record to earn the 174-pound title, Sunday, at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. Seeded third entering the event, Czarneski defeated both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, including Ithaca’s Dave Priest (Douglassville, Pa.), 7-1, in the final.
Czarneski’s strong effort helped propel the Hawks to the team title in the nine-team tournament. The Hawks finished with 144.5 points, edging No. 23 Williams College, who had 141 on the day. The Hawks also defeated Ithaca College, who entered the tournament ranked No. 11 in the nation.
The RWU grapplers return to action next Sunday, January 13th, when they travel to New Hampshire to compete in the Plymouth State University Tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
