BRISTOL, R.I.- Hawks sophomore Emerald Epke (Tiverton, R.I.) earned RWU Female Athlete of the Week after helping the RWU co-ed sailing team to a second-place finish at the weekend’s Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship Sunday.
In the team’s final competition this fall, Epke and the Hawks travelled to upstate New York to Hobart and William Smith Colleges only to have Saturday’s races cancelled due to poor weather conditions. An abbreviated schedule, with only five races in each division Sunday, left no room for error.
Epke, sailing with classmate Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), stepped up and posted a second-place finish in a competitive B Division. After two eighth-place finishes, Epke helped sail to a first, fifth and second place finish, totaling 24 points, just two behind first-place Harvard University. Combined with the A Division point total, RWU earned 67 points, finishing second overall behind St. Mary’s (Md.).
The ACC’s marked the end of the fall season for Epke and the team. The 2008 NEISA scheduling meeting will be held Dec. 6 at MIT to determine the spring 2009 schedule.
