BRISTOL, R.I.- Roger Williams University sophomore pitcher Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) earned The Commonwealth Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week and was also named RWU Male Athlete of the Week Monday after throwing a perfect game Sunday.
Facing TCCC opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology in the first game of the afternoon’s doubleheader, Roberge struck out three hitters en route to the program’s first-ever perfect game. It marked just the 14th perfect game in NCAA Division III history.
Roberge ran the count to full just three times in the game, coaxing his opponents into grounding out nine times and flying out nine times.
Roberge led the Hawks to the 1-0 win with offensive help coming from teammate Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) and Tony Verocchi (Norwood, Mass.) who each recorded a double in the fourth inning.
The perfect game improved Roberge’s record to 2-1 on the season with a 1.45 earned-run average in 18.2 innings pitched. Overall he’s given up nine hits, allowed nine runs and struck out 14 batters.
Roberge and the Hawks (11-5, 4-0 TCCC) next travel to Rhode Island College, Wednesday, to face the Anchormen in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
