BRISTOL, R.I.- Roger Williams junior skipper Matt Duggan (Sandwich, Mass.) has been selected RWU Male Athlete of the Week after his impressive performance at the Co-ed Atlantic Coast Championships this past weekend at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Duggan drove Roger Williams' B division collegiate FJ with crew Maria Petrillo (Mystic, Conn.) to a second place finish in their division. Their finish was particularly noteworthy, considering the field at the Co-ed ACCs was the deepest of the season, with the best sailors from all three Atlantic Conferences in attendance.
While Duggan performed well in Saturday's six races, with four top ten finishes, the pair stood in ninth place with 51 points. Things started to heat up on Sunday, as Duggan drove the pair to three first place finishes and two more in the top five. Adding just 34 points in seven races, Duggan's effort vauled the B division team to second place, and helped push Roger Williams up two places in the team standings, where they finished eighth.
While the Co-ed ACCs were the final regatta of the fall season, Duggan and the rest of the Hawks sailing team will be back on the water to compete in their spring slate of regattas beginning in March.
