BRISTOL, RI-The men’s soccer team (13-6-2, 9-1-1 CCC) beat Salve Regina (8-11-3, 7-3-1 CCC) 3-2 in a thrilling double overtime battle. The win gave the Hawks their third consecutive CCC Championship. Antoine Bell (Bordeaux, France) scored the golden goal 4:54 into the second overtime.
The Hawks got on the board first when Bell tallied after a beautiful touch pass from Evan Solis (Seymour, CT) in the 18th minute. The Hawks built a 2-0 advantage when Solis scored on a pass from Brendan Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT). The Seahawks gained some momentum going into halftime after Mike Gregory (Brewster, NY) scored on a pass from Eric Zimmer (East Brunswick, NJ). The score remained 2-1 until 1:05 left in the game, when Gregory scored his second goal of the game. The assist went to Nick Johnson (South Portland, ME). Salve Regina took control of the momentum and the Hawks were left stunned going into overtime.
The first overtime was highlighted by Ardy Jagne (Bronx, NY) getting a red card, which left the Hawks with ten men. Despite being down a man, he Hawks were able to stay in the game. Then 4:54 into the second overtime, Bell scored his second goal of the game to give the Hawks the win. A SRU player nearly put the ball into his own net, but the ball hit the crossbar and when it came down Bell knocked it in and was immediately swarmed by his teammates.
The opening round of the NCAA Tournament is November 8.
