MILTON, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder
Kary Rodgers scored a game-high six goals, leading Roger Williams University to a 13-11 victory over Curry College to capture the 2006 ECAC Division III New England Championship. Rodgers (Brookfield, Conn.) was named as the game’s Most Valuable Player.
The third-seeded Hawks (11-9) and the top-seeded Colonels (13-7) played to a 5-5 tie at halftime. In the second half, Roger Williams took the lead for good at 7-6, built a five-goal lead at 13-8, then hung on for the two-goal win.
The Hawks also received three goals and two assists from freshman midfielder Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.). Sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Schnare (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the win after making eight saves.
The Colonels were led by junior Emily Knight (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomore Nikki MacKay (Framingham, Mass.) who scored three goals apiece. Freshman Kerri Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) turned aside 11 shots in defeat.
This marks the first time in university history that the women's lacrosse program has captured the ECAC championship as they finish their amazing run at the title with a 11-9 overall record.
