BRISTOL, R.I. – Today's 3-1 win over Anna Maria College gives the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team a four-game conference winning streak while moving the Hawks in the into a tie for first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Kevin Canty (Proctor, Vt.) took advantage of a deflected save to score the game's opening goal at the 7:46 mark.
Dan Saccoccio (Holtsville, N.Y.) took a hard shot on the right side of the box, where Marshall Erickson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made a difficult save that trickled away from him, giving Canty the opportunity to capitalize on the unguarded net.
Saccoccio got another chance to put a goal on the board in the 23rd minute, bending a free kick from about 25 yards away into the upper left corner, just past the outstretched arm of Erickson for the Hawks's second score.
The AmCats would not go away, as Ara Derderian (Worcester, Mass.) converted on a penalty kick in the 55
th minute to pull Anna Maria within one. The Hawks would get the goal back ten minutes later, when
Antoine Bell (Bordeaux, France) notched his 11
th goal of the year off a one-timer from Canty.
Both goalies saw significant action, evidenced by the 42 shots taken between the two teams. Erickson and
Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) each made seven stops in the game, with Plate earning his third win of the year.
Roger Williams (7-6-1, 7-1-1 TCCC) will play an important conference game Saturday afternoon against Gordon College. The 3:00 p.m. game will be a battle for first place in the TCCC.
