Men's Soccer ties in regular-season home finale

BRISTOL, R.I. – A meeting between two of the top-three teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference ended in a stalemate, as the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team tied New England College 1-1 in double overtime.

Roger Williams opened with a quick give-and-go score from Brandon O'Donovan (Coram, N.Y.) to DJ Hunter (Middletown, Conn.) and finally to Antoine Bell (Bordeaux, France). The goal gave the Hawks the 1-0 advantage only 2:23 into the game.

The Hawk defense held up over the remainder of the period and halfway through the second half, but the offense could not get one more insurance goal through the net. This proved to be key as the Pilgrims capitalized on a Dean Smith (Schwenksville, Pa.) header via a long pass from Evan Jones (South Kingstown, R.I.) for a goal just over the outstretched arms of Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) in the 67th minute. The 1-1 score remained, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, the Hawks came close to picking up the win numerous times, including a header by Bell that was saved just before crossing the goal line and a frenzied three-shot opportunity in the closing seconds. In the end, one goal apiece would be all that was allowed in the game.

Plate made three saves for Roger Williams, while Nick Kropelin (Jeffersonville, Vt.) on the other side of the net made five stops in the game.

Despite the tie, Roger Williams (9-6-2, 9-1-2 TCCC) maintains its first-place standing in the conference and will head to Connecticut College for a 3:30 matchup next Tuesday in the Hawks' final game of the regular season.
