Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – A late second half rally helped push the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team past Wentworth Institute of Technology in the TCCC Quarterfinals, as the Hawks edged the Panthers 3-1.
The game played much closer than the score would indicate, as both teams fought back and forth throughout the first half and the beginning of the second. The scoring drought was broken in the 67
th minute, when a hard shot by
Caitlin Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) on a breakaway ricocheted off of Kirsten Vallone, who made an impressive save. The ball bounced towards an opportunistic
Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.), who netted the shot before Vallone could recover.
In the 75
th minute,
Carey Baldwin (West Hartford, Conn.) added to the Hawk lead, chipping a deep ball from
Kristen O'Gorman (Tyngsboro, Mass.) into the right corner of the net for her seventh score of the season. Mayo would then give RWU a 3-0 lead less than four minutes later, converting a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.
Though down by three, the Leopards refused to quit, as Wentworth put up four shots over the course of the final 10 minutes of the game. One of the shots found its way in, courtesy of Aly Kane (Sharon, Mass.), who one-timed a Katie Brown (North Brookfield, Mass.) pass in the 88th minute to end the shutout. The Leopards would not get any closer as the game ended in favor of the Hawks.
Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) and
Jenny Schermerhorn (Sherborn, Mass.) each made four saves in the game, with Schermerhorn picking up the win. In the other goal, Vallone stopped six shots for Wentworth.
Roger Williams (14-4-1, 10-2-1 TCCC) will travel Wednesday to take on Western New England College in the TCCC Semifinals. WNEC advanced on penalty kicks, 4-2, after a 0-0 shutout against Colby-Sawyer College.
