Box Score BEVERLY, Mass.- The Hawks' 2007 season came to an end Thursday night, as the #1 seeded Gulls of Endicott College earned a 3-1 victory over visiting fifth-seed Roger Williams. Endicott advances to face Colby-Sawyer in the TCCC final match, while Roger Williams finishes the season with an 18-15 record.
The teams battled throughout the match, with Endicott earning the game 1 victory, 30-23. The Hawks responded and defeated the Gulls 30-24 to even the match at one game apiece. Game 3 was back and forth throughout, with both teams fighting for the advantage. With the score 26-25 late in the game, the Gulls were able to side-out and outscored the Hawks 3-1 in the final stage. Endicott jumped out to an early lead in game 4 and played well to earn the game 4 victory, 30-16.
"After splitting the first two games, game 3 was critical and as close as that game was, the winner really held a huge advantage," said Head Coach Bret Stothart. "Endicott carried the momentum from that game 3 win into game 4 and we found ourselves too far behind early to force a game 5."
Senior Amy Maurer (Madbury, N.H.) led all Hawks with 13 kills on the night. She finishes the season with the RWU record in kills in a career. Junior Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) also helped on offense, handing out 35 assisted and contributing five service aces. Freshman Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) led on defense, with 21 digs in four games. Sophomore Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) had seven blocks.
"While it's disappointing falling just one win shy of returning to the championship match, it was a successful season in terms of the team really coming together well and competing at such a high level," said Stothart.
This is the last match for three Hawks: Maurer, Christine Savell (Baltimore, Md.) and Brianne Nicklaw (Agawam, Mass.). All three seniors will graduate in the Spring of 2008.
