Women's basketball earns first season win over Lasell

SALEM, Mass.- Mounting a comeback late in the second half, the Roger Williams women's basketball team earned their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon over Lasell in the Salem State Tip Off Tourney consolation game.  The Hawks outscored the Lasers 39-28 in the second half en route to a 67-64 victory. 

The Hawks trailed the Lasers almost the entire game, until a Lasell team technical sent junior forward Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) to the line.  Her second free throw put Roger Williams up for good.

"It was a solid team win" said Head Coach Tracey Hathaway-James.

The Hawks turned on the defensive pressure in the second half, holding the Lasers to 32 percent shooting including 0-1 from beyond the arc .  Offensively, the Hawks shot 34 percent on the game and benefited from many trips to the free throw line, connecting on 19 of 33 free throws.

Freshman guard Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) led the Hawks offensive push with 14 points.  Junior forward Casey Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) had a double-double, with 11 points and 13 rebounds, seven of them off the offensive glass.  Babin also had 11 points and pulled down nine boards.  Sophomore Courtney Kovalsky (Hudson, Ohio) contributed four steals and six rebounds.

Lasell was led by senior forward Lauren Picozzi who had 19 points on 8-11 shooting.  Junior Katie Schumitz was the second-highest scorer for the Lasers wtih 13 points including three from 3-point range.

The Hawks return to action on Thursday, November 29 when they travel to Eastern Connecticut State Unviersity for 7 p.m. game.  Their home opener against Mount Holyoke is on Saturday December 1 at 1 p.m.
