Women's Swiming & Diving take first at TCCC Invite

BRISTOL, R.I.- Relying on the strength of their relay teams, the Roger Williams women's swimming and diving team took first in the TCCC Invitational hosted Saturday afternoon in the Roger Williams Aquatic Center.  The Hawks finished with 914.5 points, while the University of New England took second with 659 points and Colby-Sawyer College finished third with 473.

The Hawks racked up 120 points by finishing first in three of the four relays.  The 200 medley relay team of Meghan McGrath (Manalapan, N.J.), Katy Friedrich (Stratham, N.H.), Erin O'Connell (Unionville, Conn.) and Jill Mackey (Redding, Conn.) was victorious with a time of 2:03.64.  Swimming the 400 freestyle relay were Libby Renner (Plainville, Mass.) Brigid Houlihan (Nahant, Mass.), Casey Meagher (Billerica, Mass.) and Shari Rothgeb (Denver, Colo.) who earned first wtih a time of 4:05.43.  In the 200 freestyle relay, Mackey, Rothgeb, Friedrich and Caitlin O'Connor (Wallingford, Conn.) teamed together to win with a time of 1:51.14.

The other individual Hawks winner for the day was junior diver Cara Naylor (Windsor, Conn.) who claimed the win in both the 1 meter and 3 meter events.  She scored 372.46 on the 1 meter board and 370.72 for her efforts on the 3 meter board.

Two Roger Williams swimmers also claimed second place finishes in the competitive individual events.  Distance swimmer Houlihan took second out of 22 swimmers in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:46.81 and also finished second in the 1650 freestyle with a time fo 19:31.11.  Junior swimmer Mackey placed second out of 47 entries in the 50 freestyle with her time of 26.68. 

The Invitational was the Hawks' last meet of the 2007 year.  They will begin competition again in January when they travel to New Hampshire for a dual meet against Colby-Sawyer on January 8.
