Mens Tennis drops close match to Babson

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team played a hard-fought match against Babson College but could not come away with the victory as the Hawks fell to the Beavers 5-4 Thursday evening.

The two teams were knotted in a 4-4 stalemate going into the deciding flight, a #2 singles matchup pairing Jay Dono (West Boylston, Mass.) against Ben Edick (Del Ray Beach, Fla.). Both players split the first two set, with Edick taking the first 7-6 and Dono coming back with a 6-2 win. In the third and deciding set, Edick emerged with the 6-3 win, giving Babson the victory.

“This was the most exciting match that I've been a part of during my tenure here,” said Head Coach Chris O'Brien. “Obviously we would have liked to come away with the win, but it was a very exciting match regardless.”

Some of the other highlights of the match included a 7-5, 6-2 win by Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) in #4 singles. Baker rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the first set for the win. Dan Roberts (Milford, Conn.) also played a tightly contested matchup with Austin Conti, winning the #3 singles flight 6-3, 7-6.

“Roberts played a phenomenal match,” O'Brien said.

This was the first time in O'Brien's tenure as head coach of the men's tennis team that a both teams were tied 4-4 going into the final matchup of the day.

Roger Williams (0-2) will take part in the Bryant University Tournament this weekend, with the first match scheduled to kick off at 9:00 a.m.
