Women's Hoops gets thrilling victory

N. DARTMOUTH, Mass. - A pair of clutch fast-break layups by freshman guard Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, N.Y.) pushed the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team to a win over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth by a 61-60 score in non-conference action.

Despite trailing at the half, 23-25, the Hawks battled the Corsairs down the stretch, exchanging several changes of lead in the final minutes.  After layups by Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) and Caitlin McNabb (Springfield, Mass.) gave the Hawks a 55-50 advantage with 2:10 remaining, a layup and three free throws by Umass Dartmouth's Lindsay Marsh tied the game at 55-55 with 1:39 to play. 

Two foul shots by Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) and a three pointer by the Corsairs' Vicki Andruszkiewicz left the Hawks trailing 58-57 with 1:16 remaining.  Roger Williams' next basket came on the first of Spagnola's key laups, putting the Hawks back up by one with 28 seconds left on the clock.  Umass Dartmouth took the lead again with a layup at 0:10.  Yet again Spagnola answered, driving to the hoop for a layup to put the Hawks up for good, 61-60.

Spagnola led the Hawks with 15 points, including shooting 3-3 from three-point range.  Freshman Caitlin McNabb had a double-double, with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jackie Crissalso had 13 points.  UMass Dartmouth junior Madison Molloy led all scorers with 17 on the night.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 5-8 on the season, while the Corsairs drop to 3-11.  Roger Williams will look for its first conference win this Saturday when they host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 1:00 p.m.
