Box Score HENNIKER, N.H.- Roger Williams University's Men's Basketball team jumped out to a hot start against New England College on Saturday afternoon, building a sizeable lead that held throughout the game as they defeated the Pilgrims 91-62. The win was the team's fifth straight, and keeps the Hawks perfect against teams in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (5-0). The team's overall record now stands at 9-8.
Roger Williams rode hot shooting throughout the first half, as they hit 50% of their shots from the field, including 11 of 22 from three-point range. An early 15-0 run put the team up 21-6 with 13:22 remaining. Three-point baskets by Dan Gumb (Patterson, N.Y.), Billy Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.), Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Tucker Bashaw (Williston, Vt.) put the lead at 49-18, their largest of the half, with 5:07 remaining.
The Hawks would match their 31 point advantage three times in the second half, as they outscored the Pilgrims 38-33 to finish the game up by 30, 91-62. Roger Williams also had the advantage on the boards for the game, as they collected 40 to the Pilgrims' 30.
Barrett ended the game as the Hawks' high scorer, totaling 16 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Gumb was also an offensive contributor with 15 points, while senior Geoff Baranger (Fairfield, Conn.) had 14 points for the game. Freshman Fava scored 12 points, all coming from three- point range.
The Pilgrims were led by Kingsley Onyechi (Lowell, Mass.) who totaled a team-high 16 points. Ryan Jaziri (Norwich, Conn.) added 15 points. With the loss, New England College drops to 4-12 overall while they are still searching for their first conference victory (0-5 TCCC).
Roger Williams will play again on Thursday, January 31, as they travel to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott College in a TCCC match-up at 7:00 p.m.
