Women's Soccer rolls off eighth straight win

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team continued its winning ways Wednesday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Eastern Nazarene College, extending its streak to eight games.

 

All of the scoring action came in the first half, starting with a header by RWU's Taryn Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) off of a corner by Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.) in the 23rd minute to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Heidi Kunkel (Northfield, Vt.) chipped in a goal inside the box off of a through ball from daCunha to put RWU up by two. At the 36:30 mark, daCunha added a goal of her own, shooting in a pass from Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) from inside the middle of the box.

 

At the beginning of the game, the Crusaders were able to get control of the ball on the offensive side of the field often, but were unable to set up their offense and get clear shots off. As the game progressed, the Hawk defense stifled Eastern Nazarene, holding Brooke Hale (Bangor, Maine), Danielle Koers (Attica, N.Y.), Ema Donlagic (Franklin, N.H.), and Kara Webber (Marshfield, Mass.) to a shot apiece.

 

Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) and Jenny Schermerhorn (Sherborn, Mass.) combined for the shutout, with Garside earning her 11th win of the season.

 

Joy Leaser (Encintas, Calif.) suffered the loss, making two saves in the game. Jojo Decoste (Abington, Mass.) entered the game in the second half, holding RWU scoreless over the final 45 minutes while making six saves.

 

Roger Williams (11-2-0, 9-1-0 TCCC) hosts the University of New England Saturday at 3:00 p.m., while Eastern Nazarene (2-11-0, 0-9-0 TCCC) will take on Nichols Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
