BRISTOL, R.I. – With a 2-0 win over New England College Saturday afternoon, the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team, slides into first place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Entering the day, Western New England College stood in first place with 27 points off of their 8-0-3 record in the TCCC, while RWU's conference record of 8-1-2 gave the Hawks 26 points. The RWU win combined with Western New England's scoreless tie against the University of New England earlier in the day pushed the Hawks past the Golden Bears, as RWU has 29 points to WNEC's 28.
Prior to the game, the team paid tribute to its six seniors on the roster on Senior Day; Ardy Jagne (Bronx, N.Y.), Brandon O'Donovan (Coram, N.Y.), Dan Saccoccio (Holtsville, N.Y.), Jeffrey Taranto (Bristol, R.I.), Joseph Summa (Stamford, Conn.), and Nate Boucher (Burlington, Conn.).
Michael Patriarca (Warren, R.I.) and Archie Maoh (Monrovia, Liberia) were responsible for the Hawk offense on the day, as Patriarca took Maoh's pass and fired a shot at Pilgrim keeper Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) in the 28th minute. Mayo was able to make the save but allowed the ball to roll away in front of the net, giving Patriarca the opportunity for the put-back.
Maoh would later score himself in the second half, outrunning the Pilgrim defense on a breakaway and putting one past Mayo for the Hawks' second goal of the day.
Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) needed to make only one save in the game to earn the shutout, earning his tenth win of the season.
Roger Williams (10-4-2, 9-1-2 TCCC) wraps up conference play tomorrow in a rescheduled game against Colby-Sawyer at 1:00 p.m. New England College (9-5-3, 7-3-2 TCCC) travels to the University of New England Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. in its last game of the regular season.
