BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team wrapped up its Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 tie against Colby-Sawyer College.
A win by the Hawks would have clinched the top seed in the upcoming TCCC Tournament and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. However, the Chargers came out fired up, needing a win and the ensuing three points to remain in the hunt for the final playoff spot.
Brandon O'Donovan (Coram, N.Y.) put the first goal of the day on board for the Hawks in the 19th minute. Nate Boucher (Burlington, Conn.) slid a short pass into the left side of the box for O'Donovan to knock in a shot.
Colby-Sawyer would return the favor at the 30:35 mark, when Ryan Oldfield (Raymond, N.H.) put a pass through the middle of the box for Brian Lombard (Ipswich, Mass.), who drilled a shot into the right side of the net.
From that point on, neither team would be able to get across another score, though the opportunities to score presented itself. Archie Maoh (Monrovia, Liberia) had a shot on a breakaway in the 53rd minute that Charger keeper Chris Feites (Manchester, N.H.) made a crucial stop on, sending the ball into the air and just off the post.
Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) had four saves in the game, getting credit for a tie for the third time this season. Feites made seven stops for Colby-Sawyer, joining Plate with his third tie of the season.
The Hawks will have to wait until October 29 to find out whether or not they have clinched the #1 seed in the TCCC Tournament. Western New England College, who sits two points behind the Hawks with 28, takes on Wentworth Institute of Technology Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and can wrap up the regular season title with a win over the Leopards. A loss or tie ensures the top seed for RWU.
Roger Williams (10-4-3, 9-1-3 TCCC) finishes the regular season Tuesday with a non-conference home game against Connecticut College at 3:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (4-10-3, 4-5-3 TCCC) concludes the regular season Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Eastern Nazarene. Colby-Sawyer, who is currently tied for ninth in the TCCC with 19 points, can earn a postseason berth with a win and losses by Nichols College and Wentworth.
