BRISTOL, R.I.- The RWU women's volleyball team earned two 3-0 victories Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting St. Joseph's (CT) College and Baruch College. Junior Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) hit a blistering .382 on the day along with eight blocks.
In the Hawks' first match of the day, senior Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) tallied six service aces during a 13-point run to start the match. RWU cruised to the eventual 25-11 win.
The Blue Jays responded well in the second set, taking an early 7-3 lead and extending it to 14-8 before RWU posted a 10-3 run to take the lead. The Hawks finished strong, taking the 25-23 second-set victory.
The teams started the third set evenly up until 5-5 when RWU took control, scoring a 20-6 run to win again, 25-11.
Hawks sophomore Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) posted the team's highest hitting percentage and kill percentage with five kills and two errors on nine swings. Sophomore Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) recorded 11 digs and two service aces in the win.
Three Blue Jays recorded five kills in the match: Megan Gagne (Bristol, Conn.), Catherine Irwin (Barkhamstead, Conn.) and Brittany Souza (Newington, Conn.). Senior Antoinett Marciano (South Windsor, Conn.) tallied 12 assists.
The match-up between the two visitors was controlled by Baruch, while St. Joe's battled throughout. The first set finished in favor of Baruch, 25-22. The Bearcats continued their momentum early into the second set before Irwin served five straight points to bring the Blue Jays within one, 14-13. Baruch finished strong taking the second set, 25-20 before cruising to an easy 25-11 win in the third.
In the Hawks' second match of the day, the team combined for a season-high .292 hitting percentage, led by Dolan who tallied 11 kills with just two errors on 20 attempts. Dion posted a .364 hitting percentage on 11 swings, while sophomore Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) registered .286 on 14 swings.
The Hawks cruised to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 sweep, holding Baruch to a negative .023 hitting percentage thanks to 10 team blocks and 42 digs. Hurd again led the team with 11 digs, while Sullivan also posted double-digits with 10. Bosworth guided the RWU offense with 25 assists.
Baruch was led by Berbelin Jape (Santo Domingo, D.R.), who notched six kills on 16 swings in the match. Sophomore Kristin Walker (Fayetteville, Ark.) led the Bearcats with 17 assists.
RWU improves to 12-7, while Baruch moves to 8-12 after the day's split. St. Joes falls to 3-10. The Hawks return to conference play Wednesday, hosting Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
