Archie Maoh scores twice for the Hawks

Men's Soccer moves into 1st-place tie in TCCC with 3-1 win

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team earned its fourth straight Commonwealth Coast Conference win Wednesday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Salve Regina University. The win gives the Hawks 19 points in the conference and moves the team into a three-way tie for first place.

 

Archie Maoh (Monrovia, Liberia) led the Hawks with a pair of goals in the game, including the first score of the contest. In the 20th minute, Maoh headed in the ball on the fly off of a corner by Dan Saccoccio (Holtsville, N.Y.) to put RWU on the board.

 

In the 75th minute, he added his second goal of the game. Maoh took a shot from the top of the box heading for the top shelf. Seahawk keeper Kurt Ginthwain (Tolland, Conn.) was able to get a hand on the box, attempting to punch it over the goal. The ball fell on the line and rolled into the goal before Ginthwain could clear the shot, giving RWU a 3-1 lead.

 

Salve Regina ended the shutout in the final minute when Jimmy Dean (Colonia, N.J.) one-timed a pass from Christopher Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) in the net with only 41 seconds to go.

 

Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) had the other score for the Hawks in the game, dropping in a shot to the center of the net off of a pass from Nate Boucher (Burlington, Conn.).

 

Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) had one save in the game to pick up his seventh win on the year. Ginthwain, who now stands with a record of 7-5-0,  stopped five balls for the Seahawks,

 

Roger Williams (7-3-1, 6-1-1 TCCC) will host Western New England College Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for at least a share of first place in the TCCC. Salve Regina (7-5-0, 5-2-0 TCCC) will travel to Colby-Sawyer College Saturday for a 12:30 game.
