BRISTOL, R.I. – A late goal helped push the second-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team past #7 Western New England College in the opening round of The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, as the Hawks won 1-0 in double overtime.
A stout defensive effort by both sides kept the contest scoreless over the first three periods. However, Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored the game-winner in the opening two minutes of the second extra period, launching a hard shot into the right corner of the goal to advance Roger Williams to the semifinals. The win gives Roger Williams its 13th straight shutout win.
Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) held on for her 12th shutout of the season, making two saves in the game. For the Golden Bears, Jessica Covino (Bristol, Conn.) made four saves in the loss.
Roger Williams (16-2-0) moves on to the TCCC Semifinals, where the Hawks will host the third seeded University of New England, who defeated #6 Colby-Sawyer College 1-0 earlier in the day. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Nichols College finishes with a record of 8-12-0 and 7-6 in the TCCC.
