NEW LONDON, Conn. – The RWU wrestling team recorded a 37-10 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy, Wednesday, in New London, Conn. The Pilgrim League victory improves the Hawks dual match record to a perfect 2-0 this season.
A back-and-forth battle marked the beginning of the contest with the teams trading wins for the first four matches. In the 157 match, RWU junior Kyle Rodgers (Danbury, Conn.) defeated Josh Surgeion, 12-0, sparking the Hawks to victory in the final eight-straight bouts.
Dan Zotollo (Paramus, N.J.) and Kenneth Ford (Meriden, Conn.) won, 8-4 and 5-3, respectively, before James Woods (Demarest, N.J.) earned the major decision win, 19-4.
Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) pinned his opponent at 1:41 before Zackery Weinrich (Newton, N.J.) won by forfeit in the heavyweight division.
This was the first Pilgrim League contest for Coast Guard, giving it a 0-1 record.
RWU looks to continue its momentum Saturday when they travel to Springfield College to compete in the Doug Parker Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m.
