Women's Soccer advances to TCCC Championship with double OT win

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team punched its ticket to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship game with a 3-2 victory over the University of New England Tuesday afternoon in double overtime.

The win gives the Hawks its third consecutive berth to the conference championship, where RWU faced off against Endicott College each time. Roger Williams entered the game on a 13-game shutout streak dating back to September 17th.

The game ended similar to the Hawks' semifinal win against Western New England College, via a golden goal in double overtime by Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.) In the opening minute of the second extra period, Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) made a throw-in to daCunha, who got to the ball inside the box after its first bounce. Before keeper Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) was able to get to it, daCunha kicked the waist-high ball over the goalie and bounced into the net to give the Hawks the win.

Prior to the game-winner, it proved to be a tale of two halves, as the Hawks jumped out to an early lead when daCunha bent it a corner kick in the sixth minute just around the post for the Hawks first score of the game. From that point, the Hawks used the momentum and stifled the Nor'Easter offense, holding UNE to only one shot in the period.

In the second half, the Hawks added another goal in the 53rd minute when daCunha set up Pendleton with a long pass out in front. Pendleton was able to beat Engel to the ball knocking over her head and chipping it into the open net.

Despite trailing by two, the Nor'Easters refused to quit, and began to control the tempo of the game, getting to loose balls and setting up the offense more efficiently than that of the first half. At the 62:25 mark, Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) put up a long shot from outside the box that lined up just inside the left side of the goal to cut the deficit to one and notch the first goal on the Hawk defensive in almost seven weeks.

With the score, the Nor'Easters regained the momentum and began to penetrate deep and often into Hawk territory. The turning point came in the 81st minute, when Ali Trafton (Manchester, Maine) hooked a corner kick that deflected off of a Hawk defender and in the net for the equalizer. The score remained tied over the final nine minutes and the overtime period until daCunha's game winner.

Though junior keeper Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) had her scoreless streak snapped at 1109:58 minutes, she still earned her 17th win of the season. It marked the first time this season that the Hawks have won while allowing a goal.

Engel made four saves in the game including a crucial defensive stop in the 72nd minute on a breakaway for Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.).

Roger Williams (17-2-0, 12-1-0 TCCC) will await the winner of the Endicott/Gordon game in the TCCC Championship. The University of New England finishes the season with a record of 13-5-0 and 10-3-0 in the conference.
