Top seed hands Hawks volleyball TCCC Semifinal loss

BEVERLY, Mass. – The RWU Hawks suffered a 3-0 loss to Endicott College Thursday in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals. The top seeded Gulls move on to the Finals, Saturday, in search of their third-straight title.


Strong serving by sophomore Brittany Phillips (Sudbury, Mass.) gave Endicott the early 7-0 lead in the game's first set - a deficit RWU could not overcome, falling in the end, 25-14.


A determined Hawks squad responded in the second set, playing well throughout and taking the 21-20 lead late in the contest. Endicott battled back, gaining a two-point edge, 24-22, before junior Stephanie Wiese (Higganum, Conn.) earned a kill on set point to give Endicott the 2-0 lead.


Another battle ensued in the third set with the scores tied nine times throughout, including 7-7, 14-14 and 19-19. Another late run for the Gulls secured the 25-19 win and their fifth-straight appearance in the conference championship.


Roger Williams was led by sophomore Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) who totaled 10 kills on 18 swings with just two errors. Senior Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) had 24 assists while Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) notched 10 digs.


Endicott was led by Phillips' nine kills, 11 digs, and four aces. Steph Wiese (Higganum, Conn.) had four kills, four digs and two blocks. Elyse Barbour (Greenville, R.I.) finished the night with six kills and just one error on 10 swings, while also posting seven blocks upfront. Senior Hayley Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) set a new program record as she had eight assisted blocks in the win. Janelle also tied the school mark for total blocks in a match with nine. Morgan Knees (Newtown, Conn.) had two kills and four blocks, while Casey Ward (Monroe, Conn.) dished out 13 assists and eight digs. Senior libero Brittany Nolan (Monroe, Conn.) posted 15 digs for the Gulls.


Endicott (23-14, 10-0) moves on to host second-seeded Colby-Sawyer College in Saturday's Championship. Roger Williams finishes the season with a record of 22-14 and 7-3 in the TCCC.
