BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU wrestling team posted a perfect 3-0 record Saturday, defeating host University of Southern Maine, American International College and Plymouth State University at the USM Quad Meet at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.
The Hawks, currently ranked fourth in New England, defeated USM, 30-20, before cruising past AIC, 39-12, and Plymouth State, 41-6.
Three Hawks earned three wins on the day. Senior tri-captain Andrew Hawley (Huntington, Mass.), wrestling at 141, started the day with an 11-1 major decision vs. USM's Nick Spencer. He later pinned Plymouth State's Chris Greenwood at 1:51 and won a 9-6 decision against AIC's Rob Merchant.
Sophomore Thomas Tuminelli (Howell, N.J.) also recorded a win by fall, pinning Plymouth State's Logan Russell in 1:18. He also posted two wins by decision to finish 3-0.
Senior tri-captain Jared Czarneski (Shelton, Conn.) also went 3-0 on the day, earning a 20-2 technical fall, 12-4 decision and a forfeit win.
In the day's other duals Plymouth State defeated USM, 25-24, but lost to AIC, 27-21. USM defeated defeated AIC, 39-16.
RWU improves to a perfect 5-0 this season. The team returns to action in the New Year, hosting the Scott Viera Invitational, Sunday, Jan. 4, beginning at 10 a.m.
