Wrestlers win over WPI

BRISTOL, R.I.- The Roger Williams University wrestling team dominated its last regular season contest of the 2007-08 season, downing Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 38-3, Wednesday night on the RWU Bristol campus.

 

After dropping its only match of the night at 125, RWU proceeded to build a strong lead after junior Andrew Hawley (Huntington, Mass.) earned a forfeit win at 133 and senior Dan Rokas (Atkinson, N.H.), wrestling at 149, posted the team's first of two major decision wins bringing the score to 13-3.

 

RWU junior James Woods (Demarest, N.J.) recorded the contest's only win by fall, pinning junior Scott Guzman (Acton, Maine) at 0:46 in the 184 bout. Hawks freshman Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) followed-up Woods' pin with a 10-2 major decision win at 197 and heavyweight John Russo (Berlin, Conn.) finished off the match earning six points with an injury default win.

 

The non-conference win improves RWU's record to 13-7-2. RWU now gears up for the New England Division III Championships at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine, Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24. The Hawks currently rank second in New England behind only Johnson & Wales - currently 13th in the nation.
