Women's Basketball falls in cross-town rivalry game

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. – A stifling defense prevented the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team from its fifth conference win, as Salve Regina University defeated the Hawks 33-59 Wednesday evening.

Roger Williams was held to a season-low 21.1 percent shooting from the field while committing 25 turnovers.

Salve Regina's Allison Moen (Yonkers, N.Y.) finished with 19 points, 16 rebounds, and nine steals, just one steal shy of a triple-double.

The Hawks held a 5-4 lead 16:45 into the game, but a 6-3 run followed by a seven-minute scoring drought put RWU in an eight-point hole. The Hawks found themselves down 24-10 going into the second half and could not cut the double-digit deficit.

Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) led the Hawks with 12 points and nine rebounds. Karen Ewanowski (Middletown, Conn.) added 10 points, including a pair of 3-point shots.

Roger Williams (9-11, 4-4 TCCC) will take on the University of New England Saturday at 1:00 p.m., where the team will hold Think Pink Day to raise awareness about cancer. Salve Regina (11-8, 5-3 TCCC) plays at Colby-Sawyer College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
