Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.- The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team could not overcome a 14-point deficit at the half, as they fell Saturday afternoon to conference opponent the University of New England, 64-52.
An early 7-4 lead with 17:50 on the clock would prove to be the Hawks' last of the game, as they struggled offensively during the first half. A 16-2 UNE run left the score at 9-25 with 6:33 remaining. Three jumpers and a pair of free throws by junior Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) would cut the Nor'Easters' lead, but the Hawks' 27 percent (8 of 29) shooting compared to the visitors' 46 percent (12 of 26) left Roger Williams down by 14 at the half.
The Hawks' quest did not become any easier at the start of the second half, as the Nor'Easters opened the perioed on a 16-7 run. Their 49-29 lead with 15:14 remaining would prove the largest of the game. Despite improved shooting (11 of 15) in the half, the Hawks would only come back to outscore the Nor'Easters by two in the period (30-28), closing the game down 64-52.
UNE was led by Katie Diggins (Merrimack, N.H.) who posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alli Gamache (Dudley, Mass.) and Lyndie Libby (Buxton, Maine) each added 14.
The Hawks were paced by senior Casey Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.), who recorded 16 points and 7 boards for the game. Babin would finish with 14 points and 6 rebounds.
With the win, the Nor'Easters improve to 11-10 (5-4 TCCC), while the Hawks drop to 9-12 (4-5 TCCC). Roger Williams is currently clinging to eighth place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference standings.
Roger Williams returns to action this Tuesday, February 12th, when they host Anna Maria College in the first game of a Hawks doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m.
