Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.- The men's lacrosse team suffered a 7-6 double overtime loss Wednesday at Lasell College. The Hawks tied the game with 14 seconds left in regulation to send it into overtime, but after a scoreless first overtime and just five seconds remaining in the second overtime, Lasell junior Derek Allen (Billerica, Mass.) recorded the game-winning goal.
After a scoreless first overtime period, a scramble in front of the RWU net ensued as the clock in the double overtime was winding down. Allen eventually beat Hawks goalkeeper Bobby Hensley (Simsbury, Conn.) to give the Lasers their third-straight victory.
The game was tight throughout, with neither team owning more than a two-goal lead. Lasell was the first to strike, when Mike Maggio (Winchester, Mass.) scored his first of two on the day at 7:29 of the first period. Hawks Dave Hurley (Hanover, Mass.) responded with just one minute left in the first to tie the game at 1-1.
The team's traded goals again in the second quarter leading to a 2-2 tie at halftime.
Back-to-back goals by Lasell in the third quarter put the team ahead 4-2 before RWU's Sean Benner netted a goal at 7:40 in the third. A late Lasell goal in the third period gave the Lasers the two-goal advantage heading into the final period in regulation.
RWU senior Slade Patterson (Needham, Mass.) cut the deficit to one just 49 seconds into the final quarter and another RWU goal by Packy Markham (Cutchogue, N.Y.) tied the game with 11:38 remaining.
The Hawks found themselves down again at 6:35 when Brian Yepez (Hillsborough, N.J.) scored an unassisted goal, but Patterson scored in the clutch with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Lasell's goalkeeper Mark DeMieri (Seaford, N.Y.) made 13 saves in the game, including three in the overtime periods to help secure the win for the Lasers.
The 1-2 Hawks look to rebound during their spring break trip to Clermont, Fla. where they'll first meet Amherst College Tuesday afternoon before facing Hamilton College Saturday morning.
