CAPE CORAL, Fla.- The Roger Williams softball team had a win and a loss on their first day of Spring Break competition, dropping the first game 8-5 to St. Lawrence, and then picking up a win against Rutgers-Newark 6-4 at the Cape Coral Sports Complex Monday morning..
In game one, senior Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.) took the mound for the Hawks, going the full seven innings. Roger Williams held a 4-2 lead after three innings, after Gregory lit up the offense with a two-run home run. The Hawks added another run in the fifth inning, as LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.) singled, stole second, and was brought home on a single by Gregory.
Yet the Scarlet Raiders would go back up for good in the sixth inning, as they strung together four singles and a double to score four runs. Freshman pitcher Megan Goodemote (Queensbury, N.Y.) earned the win, allowing six hits and walking two while going the distance.
In the second game, sophomore pitcher Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) also went a complete game, pitching seven innings in which she allowed 6 hits and 4 walks in the win. The senior trio of Jen Lyford (Raynham, Mass.), LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.) and Gregory combined for seven hits. Lyford was three for four with four stolen bases, Lewis went two of four including a home run down the left field line, and Gregory also added two hits.
"We played well for our first day on the field," said Assistant Coach Mallory Rapoza. "We're looking forward to the competition the rest of the week."
Tomorrow's games set the Hawks against Worcester State at 1:00 p.m. and SUNY New Paltz at 1:00 p.m.
