FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Roger Williams softball team earned another split on the third day of spring break competition. Facing the Scots of The College of Wooster in the day's first game, the Hawks only run came in the first inning as they fell 3-1. In the afternoon matchup against Lasell, a seven-run bottom of the fourth helped push the Hawks to victory, 10-5.
In the game against Wooster, the Hawks went to bat first, scoring in the first inning as Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.) doubled, advanced on a grounder by LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.) and was brought home on an RBI single by Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.).
The Fighting Scots put two runs on the board in the third, as Kim Skully (Brooklyn Heights, Ohio) had a two-RBI double. They added the game's final run in the fifth, as Priscilla Staples (Stoughton, Mass.) singled, Skully walked, and Katelyn Caywood (Amherst, Ohio) brought Staples home with a single to left field.
Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) completed six innings for the Hawks, allowing five hits, walking three, and striking out two. Andrea Kelley (Westerville, Ohio) earns the win, giving up seven hits in as many innings.
In the afternoon game against Lasell College, it was the Lasers to put the first runs up, as they put together five hits to score four runs in the top of the second inning.
Yet the Hawks would soon ready their bats, stringing together seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lewis led off with a triple to left field, and then was advanced to second when Gregory was hit by a pitch. Next, Callie Nealon (Hopkinton, Mass.) drew a walk to load the bases. Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) and Adrianna Sicari (Hartsdale, N.Y.) each got on with RBI singles, and sophomore Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) doubled, bringing home Caprice and Nealon.
Still the barrage continued, with Lyford putting down a successful bunt for another RBI. Sereti would score the final run of the inning, getting on with a walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice fly by Lewis, and coming home on an RBI single by Gregory.
The Hawks added another three runs in the top of the sixth, as Lyford, Sereti and Lewis each singled, and Gregory was walked, bringing Lyford home. Nealon was credited with the other two RBIs, singling to center to score Lewis and Sereti.
Lasell was able to add a run in the seventh, with a triple by Heather Rose (West Roxbury, Mass.) and an error to bring her home.
When the dust settled, the Hawks were up 10-5, with twelve hits. The team was an impressive 4-5 with the bases loaded, and collectively hit .413 for the game. Gregory earned the win, going seven innings and allowing eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Amanda Corey (Brooklyn, Conn.) takes the loss for Lasell.
The Hawks' spring break odyssey continues tomorrow, as Roger Williams faces Albright College at 11:00 a.m. and the University of Southern Maine at 1:00 p.m.
