Women's lacrosse remains perfect in conference play

BRISTOL, R.I.- The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team (4-1) improved to 2-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tuesday with a 21-7 win over visiting University of New England (2-4). Freshman Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) scored a career-high six goals and added one assist in the Hawks win.

 

Senior Kary Rodgers (Brookfield, Conn.) contributed on each of the first three goals of the game with an assist and two markers to put the Hawks ahead, 3-0, just five minutes into the first half. UNE responded well and the teams traded goals to a 6-4 score with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.

 

A 5-1 run, capped by senior Kara Smolca's (Gaithersburg, Md.) second goal of the game - scored as the last second of the half ticked away - gave RWU the 11-5 lead at the break.

 

Halliday helped put the game away for RWU, scoring three straight unassisted goals within the first five minutes of the second half to move the Hawks ahead, 14-5. The Hawks cruised through the rest of the half, allowing just two goals en route to their fourth win of the season.

 

Hawks goalkeeper Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) improved to 4-1, making 10 saves, while the Nor'easters' Jackie Price (Billerica, Mass.) recorded the loss despite 10 saves in 45:19.

 

The next game for RWU is at Rhode Island College, Thursday, beginning at 3:30.
